While using an Infinity enteral feeding pump, you may sometimes encounter an error code. When this happens, the pump will sound a continuous beep and the display on the pump will show ‘ER’ followed by a two digit number between 01 – 99.
Infinity pumps display an error code if a self-test error is detected. This self-test process is a crucial safety check that ensures the pump is functioning as intended and protects patients from technical or mechanical failures.
There are a few things that patients and caregivers can do to help reduce the occurrence of error codes:
- When cleaning the pump, ensure that it is completely dry before turning it on. If the pump is still wet when the cassette is loaded around the pump rotor, the tubing could slip which could lead to a self-test error such as ER10. For best tips on cleaning your pump, read our post How to Clean Infinity Enteral Feeding Pumps at Home.
- Avoid pressing the on/off button for too long when powering on the pump. For example, if the on/off button is held down too long, the pump may interpret that action as a stuck key error and may display code ER40.
- Ensure that the pump is always stored in proper environments. If the pump gets too hot or too cold, it result in an error code ER04.
If an error occurs, first try to clear the alarm by powering the pump off and on again. There is no routine calibration or maintenance required on the Infinity pump as it performs a self-calibration each time it is powered off and then on again. This process ensures that the pump is operating properly.
If this step resolves the alarm, verify that all feeding settings (rate, dose, etc.) are correct before beginning a feeding.
